Job description

The Kitchen Live-in Volunteer reports to the Operational Manager and is responsible for providing safe, nutritious food that aligns with the Ashram’s ethos of compassionate living. This role requires ensuring compliance with Welsh food safety legislation, maintaining high hygiene standards, and fostering a mindful kitchen environment for residents, guests, and Karma Yogi volunteers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Food Preparation & Hygiene: Adhere to HACCP principles and Safer Food, Better Business (SFBB) procedures, manage temperature controls, prevent cross-contamination, and maintain strict personal hygiene and cleaning records.
  • Allergen Management: Maintain accurate, up-to-date allergen information and ingredient records in line with the Food Information Regulations 2014 and Natasha’s Law.
  • Health & Safety: Conduct equipment checks, ensure safe usage of kitchen appliances, comply with manual handling and COSHH regulations, and report hazards immediately.
  • Environmental Health: Ensure the premises meet inspection requirements and support the Ashram in maintaining a high Food Hygiene Rating.
  • Waste & Sustainability: Manage waste segregation, support composting, and assist with stock rotation using the FIFO method.
  • Karma Yoga Coordination: Provide leadership and hygiene briefings to volunteers, ensuring a safe, respectful, and calm kitchen culture.

Requirements and Accountability

The volunteer must adhere to various UK and Welsh laws, including the Food Safety Act 1990 and Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974. Personal attributes required include strong food safety knowledge, attention to detail, physical stamina, and the ability to work calmly under pressure while managing budgets effectively. The role is ultimately accountable for legal compliance, accurate documentation, and supporting the Ashram's spiritual values. All meals are provided, along with private single accommodation (shared bathroom) and monthly living allowance (£8,000 allowance annually).
