Job description

Farm Shop Manager — The Salty Dog, Presteigne, Powys

Salary: £30,000–£34,000 depending on experience Hours: Full time, 40 hours a week over five days, including Saturdays Location: Presteigne, Powys (on the Welsh–English border) Start: October/November 2026, flexible for the right person

About us: The Salty Dog is a long-standing fruit and vegetable shop in Presteigne, a town of 2,000 people on the Radnorshire border. In January 2027 it becomes a farm shop. Nearly everything we sell will come from farms close by – vegetables, fruit, frozen fish, and the things those farms make themselves: eggs, preserves, cordials, soaps. We source from regenerative and agroecological growers as well as certified organic ones. We want the shop to be a bridge between our community and the people who grow and make food around here. We also want it to be more than a shop: a hub for people who care about food, with gatherings and workshops.

The role: You would run the shop day to day, report directly to the owner and help shape what it becomes. Starting before the relaunch means you'd help build it rather than inherit it — the first months are for meeting growers, setting up supply, and working on the relaunch.

  • Building and holding relationships with growers and producers – knowing what's coming in, when, and in what quantity
  • Buying, ordering, stock control, pricing and margin, minimising waste on fresh produce
  • Help building the shop's online presence
  • Organising the workshop programme and working with local tutors
  • Day-to-day compliance: food hygiene, labelling, cash and records

About you:

  • A real passion and commitment to local and sustainable food
  • Experience in food retail, hospitality, market gardening or a related trade
  • Confident and capable online – social media, ordering systems, basic digital admin
  • Numerate and organised; comfortable with stock, margin and waste
  • Able to work independently and make decisions
  • A driving licence and access to a car
  • Living within about 30 mins of Presteigne, or committed to moving here before you start
  • Knowledge of local growers, produce buying, food hygiene certification are all welcome but not essential.

What we offer: £30,000–£34,000 depending on experience, 30 days’ holiday including bank holidays, and a workplace pension. This is a small business with a small team and there is genuine room to shape where it goes. We'll review the role and the pay after twelve months.

To apply: Send a CV and a short covering letter to chloe@thekeptmorning.com by 18 October 2026. In the letter, please tell us about a food shop you admire, and why – and why are you interested in this shop, in this area. Interviews will be held in Presteigne in late October.
