Paid Traineeship

Job description

Trainee Grower with view to Head Grower Vacancy at The Fold CIC, Worcestershire

A great land baseed opportunity - Healthy soil, healthy food, healthy people

This is a full-time opportunity starting April or early May 2021

The Fold organic farm & market garden in Worcester is seeking a trainee full-time grower who will step into the grower role for the 2022 season. This will include all aspects of production (from propagation through to harvest and delivery) of vegetables, fruit, herbs and hens with trials currently running for combinable crops of population wheats and pulses for human consumption. This role includes weekend duties on a rota and the opportunity to assist in planning, marketing produce, and basic administration.

The market garden is located at the Fold, a unique and ambitious not-for-profit Community Interest Company, which has been running for 14 years, set up to improve the health and wellbeing of individuals, the community and the planet. It currently offers nature trails, a ‘local seasonal organic’ café, a natural therapy centre, a farm shop, workshops, studios, shops, an ‘organic’ hairdressing salon, a monthly farm market, gigs, events, yoga and other classes and of course – the farm! For more information See

The farm and market garden, which is certified organic by the Soil Association, includes nearly an acre of no-dig raised beds, ⅓ acre of polytunnels and a 4 acre field of new low till beds. The market garden sells to the on-site Fold farm shop and café, a growing on-site veg share scheme, monthly markets and a certain amount of wholesale.

The Fold Farm is inspired by the practice of regenerative agriculture and bio-intensive growing on 1.2m low till beds using simple equipment and lots of compost to develop a healthy soil food web.

The trainee grower will work alongside our Farm Manager and Head Grower, existing residential growers, and day volunteers. The Fold Farm is also a venue for the Fold Care Farm, where three days a week, participants with various additional needs spend therapeutic time on the farm with a dedicated tutor.

Whilst the Care Farm has been running for over 10 years, the commercial aspect of the Farm is relatively new and thus the business is not yet able to pay salaries. This position is offered full board with various accommodation options and a generous stipend subject to experience. The farm house is home to several people who live and work at the Fold and form a community of like-minded and sociable people.

The Fold has some exciting visions for the future including developing the veg shares, forming an educational charity, running earth-based courses and events, promoting farm to fork, a community housing project and raising human consciousness.
